Chamonix
There's a good chance that Chamonix rings a bell, even if you
are new to alpine sports. Chamonix is the charming Alpine town
at the base of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak, and
steeped in climbing tradition. Yet, beyond the busy summer season,
it is also a Mecca for ski and snowboard enthusiasts from around
the world.
First and foremost, is a reputation for some of Europe's best
steep and deep off-piste skiing and riding. It's a fearsome reputation,
that is ignored at it's peril, and taking a local guide with you
is essential. However, it's not all scary stuff. Chamonix's ski
area is spread across six varied and largely disjointed areas
within the Chamonix Valley. The areas of Le Tour and Les Houches
at opposite ends of the valley, are both pretty tree-clad resorts,
well suited to beginners and nervous intermediates. They also
offer some challenges for the more experienced, and are the better
options for all during poor visibility.
