Verbier is synonymous with some of the most jaw-dropping off-piste
skiing/riding in the world amongst awe-inspiring scenery. All
the better that the majority can be accessed by the modern lift
system. It's also the major resort in what is known as the
4 Valleys, 400km of just-about interlinked pistes, offering the
most thrills to confident intermediates and above.
However, Verbier has also attained kudos as a party town, more
so to those who prefer glamour and high-life, and don't mind
paying a premium for the pleasure. That said, you can escape to
more down-to-earth pastures, and a burgeoning snowboard scene
offers alternative hang outs less likely to break the bank.
Aesthetically, it's a typical Swiss resort, a sprawling
mix of old and new alpine style buildings, some attractive, others
less so. Place Centrale is the resort's beating heart which
buzzes with activity.
If you are adverse to walking or getting a bus, it's best
to locate yourself between here and the main Medran lift station.
However, easier said than done as generally you'll pay extra
for the pleasure.
Alternatively try to be close to the Savoleyres lifts, which
access a decent area for snowboarders and those less confident
on steep runs. However, wherever you're based, there is a
pretty efficient free bus system which circulates the resort.
The main action happens on or off the sharp peak of Mont Fort(3330m)
with nail biting extreme off-piste action, a serious terrain park,
pipe and testing bump runs for those who find them enjoyable.
A major descent will take you to Siviez (1700m) from where it's
possible to explore varied terrain in the further reaches of the
4 Valleys above the resorts of Nendaz and Veysonnaz.
Other options include taking the cable car down into the valley
and then accessing the much quieter slopes above Bruson, where
fresh powder remains untracked for days as opposed to hours across
much of the main ski area.
Back in the resort, there are plenty of shops and a sports centre
to keep you amused on poor weather days. Not that there are many
of these, with a reputed 300 + days of sunshine each year. Verbier,
in short, is a resort for thrill seekers, on and off the slopes,
but not a budget destination.
